| Vice Presidency:
Gore was inaugurated as the 45th Vice President of the United States
on January 20, 1993. Gore and Clinton were re-elected to a second term
in the 1996 election. Gore actively supported the policies of Clinton,
shared the popularity and in 1996, he unambiguously expressed his
presidential ambitions.
During the eight years of Clinton / Al Gore administration, U.S economy
expanded. One of the factors was Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of
1993, for which Gore cast the tie-breaking vote. One of Gore's major
works as Vice President was the National Performance Review, which
pointed out waste, fraud and other abuse in the federal government and
stressed the need for cutting the size of the bureaucracy and the
number of regulations. Gore stated that the National Performance
Review later helped guide President Clinton when he down-sized the
federal government.
Deprived Vice President of United States, Al Gore in many ways helped
the development of Internet. He calls himself "Father of Internet" and
many even agree with this.
Gore ran for the President in 2000 United States Presidential election
selecting Senator Joe Lieberman to be his vice-presidential running
mate but was unsuccessful. Even after garnering more electoral votes
than his Republican George Bush (Jr), Gore got less votes of the
electors whereas such a result was determined through voting in
Florida, where Bush won over Al Gore with final margin of 537 votes or
by less than one hundredth percentage. In the unfolded
situations, Gore and his supporters did not concede but demanded
recounts of votes reckoning that errors are unavoidable during the
counting of 6 million votes- and the errors (from both the sides) were
found. At the end, after one month of counting and judicial
proceedings, Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Florida
recount was unconstitutional, effectively ending the recounts and
accept the last results. Thus, Al Gore lost the election.
Subsequently, presiding as vice-president at Joint Session of Congress
to sum up election results, Gore twenty times rejected the offers of
twenty members of the House of Representatives to invalidate an
electoral vote of state of Florida, which could have brought victory
to him. |
