This contest is fueled by the following news: The Summer Olympic Games in 2008 will take place in Beijing, the capital city of The People's Republic Of China from the 8th to the 24th of August. The opening ceremony will take place at 8:08 according to local time. Some kind of sports will be placed in the onshore city of Qingdao and Hong Kong. The mascot representing the games is Good-luck dolls. City Candidates Beijing was chosen as the capital city for the 29th Olympics on 13th July 2001 at the 112th International Olympic Committee session in Moscow. The other cities vying for the olympics were Toronto (Canada), Paris (France), Istanbul (Turkey) and Osaka (Japan). The cities which were not included in the five cities, which were in the preliminary applications, but did not get into the candidates list in 2000, were: Bangkok (Thailand), Cairo (Egypt), Havana (Cuba), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Seville (Spain). Beijing submitted a tender for the participation in the Summer Olympics of 2000, but for the elections, which were held in 1993, Beijing could not win. Sporting Arenas Beijing National Stadium, National Gymnasium, Olympic Swimming pool, Olympic village and cultural and sports center the most important and main subjects are the Olympic constructions. For the entire construction 2.1 billion dollars (17.4 billion Yuan) have been invested. 37 Olympic sports will be operated in Beijing in total and 6 Olympic sports will be held out of the capital city. The total cost of the investment in the infrastructure of the Olympic Games comes at around 50 billion dollars. The Symbol of Games Emblem The emblem for the Beijing Olympic Games was chosen in August 2003 and was called the "dancing Beijing". In the emblem the traditional elements of China were indulged: a red background and a calligraphically written hieroglyph word Jing ("The Capital of the State"), reminding the figure of sportsmen. Mascot On the 11th of November 2005, 1000 days to the opening of the games, it was decided that the symbol of "Good-luck dolls" (Chinese word "Fuwa") will stand as the mascot of the games. According to Chinese philosophy, there are five good-luck dolls: Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, and Nini. They in turn consist of five members that incorporate fish, giant panda, fire, Tibetan antelope, and swallow designs. Pronouncing in order the first syllable of the names of each of them we get a Chinese phrase, the English translation of which means "Welcome to Beijing". Motto The Olympic committee of Beijing declared on 26th June of 2005 year, that the phrase "One World, One Dream" will stand as the motto of the Olympic Games. The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games takes place on the 8th of August 2008, however the football competition starts on the 6th of August itself, two days earlier than the official opening ceremony. Most of the medals will be won in the final day of the Games, the 23rd of August, when the finals for many teams take place. On the 8th of August 2007 at 08:08:08 according to the local time, at the central square of Beijing the countdown of the remaining days to Olympic Games was installed. On the 26th of April 2007 in Beijing, The International Olympic Committee declared the program of the Olympic torch relay schedule. The motto of the torch relay is "The journey of Harmony". The relay, which started 137 days before the opening of the Olympic Games, will be the longest itself in the history of the Olympic torch relay (137000 kilometers). The Olympic flame was lit in the Greece city of Olympia on the 24th of March 2008. From Olympia the flame moves alongside the territory of Greece and on the 31st of March will be in Beijing. From the Chinese capital city the flame is sent in the direction of all continents, excluding Antarctica. The relay will also pass through the cities of the Great Silk Route, symbolizing the ancient relationships of China with the rest of the World. The flame passes through 22 cities of the world, and many cities of China. The relay organizers are also planning to take the Flame to the top of Mount Everest. In June 2007 it started to rise to the 108 kilometer elevation on the top of the hills. The cost of this project is 19.7 million dollars. The Olympic torch has standard measurements and is made in a traditional Chinese style. The torch is designed in such a way so that it will not go out during a 65 km per hour wind and 50 millimeters per hour of heavy rain fall. The Contest The program of the Beijing Olympic Games is similar with the schedule of the Athens Games in 2004. In the 2008 Olympic Games 302 sets of medals will be played for (165 men's, 127 women's and 10 mixed) in 31 sports. Nine new disciplines have emerged, including a new type of cycling - BMX.
